The use of psychometric assessments which are designed to provide an objective measure of a psychological phenomenon are central tools in the application of the scientist practitioner model. This chapter explores how psychometric assessments and their results impact upon everyday clinical practice, highlighting the current tension in psychometrics in clinical practice. It uses psychometrics to explore the relationship between organisational and managerial pressures, political and theoretical concerns such as 'evidence‐based practice' (EBP), and individual clinicians' desire to evaluate their practice. The utilities of psychometrics, and its contribution or otherwise to clinical practice and as an instrument for clinical research, are also discussed. The chapter considers general uses of psychometrics in clinical practice, then discusses more individualistic uses of tests. Perhaps what is needed is for psychology to take back tools such as psychometrics, and reinvigorate them with newer knowledge and with the confidence that positivism can take us only so far.
