This volume offers the research results on broadly defined topics centering around the voice system. With ample data from diverse language families and language types, the papers prepared originally by the leading scholars in linguistic typology offer new insights into topics such as passives and ergativity, passives and the focus system, voice and inverse marking, antipassives, semantics and functions of passives/antipassives. No construction type has ever played as significant a role as the passive construction in the development of linguistic theory in the recent history of grammatical studies. While the earlier role of passives was to motivate the transformational framework, passives still continue to play a central role in grammatical investigations even after some significant shifts have taken place in linguistic research. Especially, in the area of linguistic universals research and typological studies, passives provide intriguing data and have been a target of extensive inquiry.
