Three processes relating to marriage affect the future of ethnic minority populations in Europe and other parts of the developed world. The first is the extent to which traditional early patterns of marriage, with their associated patterns of early childbearing and large family size, will give way to the later marriage and childbearing more normal in the West, and perhaps even the avoidance of marriage altogether. Second is the (mostly Asian) practice of arranged marriage to spouses from overseas, which is an increasing component of immigration flows and may impede the process of integration. Third is the extent to which marriages and other unions may instead be formed with members of the indigenous population, with all its implications for the creation of new minority groups of mixed origin with important effects on social integration.
