Discussion On the basis ofthe evidence reported above, the very marked color transformation from red to yellow, when mercuric iodide is adsorbed on the active adsorbent alumina but not on sodium fluoride, obviously is not due simply to a change in particle size. Two distinct and stable phases are involved before and after adsorption. The sta-bility of the yellowform on alumina is quite re-markable; no trace of decomposition could be observed on heating to 130 in a vacuum oven for several hours, whereas theyellow modification of mercuric iodide itself decomposes substantially under these circumstances. The spectral reflectance measurements as well as the optical and X-ray diffraction data all point to a polymorphic conversion and to the exclusion of any ionization of the type referred to by Weitz and Schmidt. 1 2 It is believed that the energy released on adsorp-tion of mercuric iodide on alumina transforms the red, stable modification to the yellow form, which continues to exist as such in the adsorbed state, as long as moisture is excluded, underthe influence of the polarizing action of the crystal field of the alumina.
