Very few of the hundred or more known Anthocerotaceae have been studied morphologically. Of the 12 species available, 8 were new in this sense[long dash]all troplcal and collected in widely separated regions. All observations made on the local (California) species and on the foreign material tended to show that certain structural features are little affected by environmental changes and that these, as well as other structures, unquestionably prove that the taxonomist''s division of the genus Anthoceros into a black- and a yellow-spored group is an entirely natural one. Points considered diagnostic are (1) spore color, (2) lacunae in the gametophyte, (3) the sporogenous layer, (4) structure and distribution of chloroplasts, with such additional and perhaps less decisive features as method of dehiscence, form of spore, antheridial number, etc. Many features unusual in Anthoceros were noted in A. hallii, a rare Pacific coast form; the sporophyte has many more points in common with that of Notothyles or of Megaceros than has that of any other Anthoceros known to the writer and is, at the same time, obviously a very close relative of A. pearsoni, another yellow-spored species.
