The encoding and retrieval of trait adjectives are presumably facilitated by rating such adjectives for their descriptiveness of familiar others (eg, the self or a well-liked person). It has been argued that such facilitation reflects the role of well-organized schemata in the encoding of personally relevant information. The present study assessed the validity of this interpretation. 80 undergraduates first decided whether positive and negative trait adjectives (a) described themselves, a well-liked, disliked, or neutral person or (b) were desirable, imageable, meaningful, or familiar. Although several results replicate past findings, others fail to support the schema view. Memory for desirability-rated adjectives was at least as good as memory for self-rated adjectives; memory was unrelated to prior yes–no ratings or to the speed of these ratings; and more negative than positive adjectives were correctly recognized. It is concluded that this paradigm does not adequately assess how knowledge about oneself and others is organized or how such organization influences the processing and retrieval of personally relevant information.(23 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
