Fundulus majalis and Cyprinodon variegatus have abundant leucophores ("guanophores," contrasted with iridophores) that respond actively, slower than melanophores. to "backgrounds." When in a black bowl, this whitish "pigment" becomes concentrated; in a white, light blue or yellow bowl it becomes dispersed, augmenting skin pallor. These responses (in F. majalis) do not depend on the pituitary. They were not checked by ergotization which abolished melanin dispersal. The leucophores are not integral parts of the melanophores with which most are combined.
