The depiction of hell as another place, however frightening, is strangely comforting because it is where we are not. In many religious and mythological traditions, it is posed in opposition to heaven where it represents a place of damnation for sinners and is typically terrifying. Something akin to Dante’s Inferno in the Divine Comedy springs to mind. Within the confines of the present, hell is temporally and spatially deferred; it lurks as a threat and a reminder of punishment in an afterlife for the unrepentant.
