The book’s chapters follow a formula, starting with a general introduction to the particular region and then to the individual countries within it. The focus, rightly, is on the history and geography of the countries’ railway networks. I, for one, am now desperate to ride on the 132-Down train from Landi Kotal to Peshawar which, Bowden explains, is the steepest non-rack-and-pinion line in the world. It hasn’t run regularly since the 1970s, but I live in hope that it will be revived. Each journey in the region is then discussed in turn, with an inspiring summary to start, track notes about the route, a description of the experience onboard, and then practical information about ticketing, the best time of year to travel, and so on. There are also carefully drawn maps of every route, photos of the trains’ interiors, exteriors, and shots of the trains passing through all manner of landscapes.
