A 110~ s intended for use with fused porcelain veneers have been well characterized by laboratory studies. In vitro tests have demonstrated significant differences between certain base metal and gold alloys in regard to their composition,‘-3 mechanical properties, 4-” thermal behavior,‘,* porcelain-metal compatibility,‘-‘” casting accuracy, and manipulative characteristics.‘7-‘3 In spite of extensive laboratory evaluation, controversy still exists regarding the clinical significance of the tests and their ability to predict the long-term clinical performance of these popular restorative materials. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of two base metal alloys, Verabond (Aalbadent Corp., Concord, Calif.) and Alpha MS (Omega Dental Co., Santa Rosa, Calif.). A conventional gold-based alloy, Jelenko ‘0’(JF Jelenko Co., Armonk, NY), was used as a basis of comparison and control.
