When the incidence of nasal carriage of staphy-lococci in different species was investigated it was found that g.pigs, pigs, hedgehogs and sheep have a rate comparable with man and this may be true also for opossums and dogs. Carriage in cattle was irregular. Most human strains produced α and δ haemolysins and most animal strains produced alpha, β and delta; β haemolysin was produced by 94% of animal strains but by only 6% of human strains. Production of β haemolysin was not related exclusively to particular types but was more common among group 3 and mixed group 1 and 3 organisms. The human phage set was of limited use in typing bovine strains and much better results were obtained when the bovine set was used. Sheep strains did not type well with the human or the bovine set with the exception of certain phages in the latter set. The evidence from the phage typing results and from some other observations suggests that Staphylococci tend to be species specific. (AS).
