Addresses the issue of relaxation (RX) techniques that have been shown to have negative effects (eg, RX-induced anxiety and panic, paradoxical increases in tension, parasympathetic rebound). Specific recommendations are offered for the management of intrusive symptoms caused by RX therapy. Whenever possible, therapists should try to calibrate the goodness-of-fit of the RX treatment to the client's primary processing style. Topics discussed include the contraindications of RX therapy and RX and pain control.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
