The viability of cartilage cells in vitro may be ascertained from their ability to metabolize sulphur. After incubation of the cartilage in Tyrode’s solution containing 35S, uptake of the isotope may be demonstrated by radioautographs (Curran & Gibson 1956). This test has enabled us to study the behaviour of cartilage grafts and the survival of cartilage cells at low temperatures.
