The carbon market, both under the Kyoto Protocol and the emerging voluntary markets open the potential for participation of the rural poor in the global endeavor to mitigate global climate change through atmospheric carbon sequestration. Such activities could enhance livelihoods and reduce poverty while supporting environmental conservation at global and local level.
