This paper proposes a combined control strategy for direct matrix converters (DMC) to stabilize the input side filter without any passive damping, simultaneously realizing the field oriented control (FOC) of an induction machine (IM) at the output. The speed control of the FOC with subsidiary torque control is left untouched. The rotor flux control loop is extended to a cascaded structure that additionally serves the needs for stabilization of the input filter, especially the active grid current. The reactive grid current is controlled by separate control loops that depend on the output side conditions created by the FOC. Linear controllers are used, which demand linearization of the instantaneous power based control loops. The functionality is proven by experimental results.
