Octyl β-glucoside is a nonionic detergent which is useful in the purification and characterization of membrane proteins. However, the cost of this reagent is prohibitive for large-scale protein purifications. A simple procedure to recover pure octyl β-glucoside from mixtures of detergents with proteins and buffer salts is described.
