Deterrence features prominently in efforts to reduce wildlife crime in protected areas (PAs). This chapter provides an overview of deterrence theory as it applies to wildlife crime within PAs. It then reviews the relevant literature, the theoretical underpinnings of deterrence theory as it relates to the criminology, and the benefits and limitations of deterrence‐based approaches in the management and monitoring of PAs. The chapter also discusses the relevance and role of the government‐legitimacy literature as it relates to natural resource management. Legitimacy and normative compliance have clear theoretical relevance to the prevention of wildlife crime, although the literature on compliance within natural resource management and enforcement of conservation regulations is limited compared to other fields. Drawing on the crimino‐logical and criminal justice literature, the chapter demonstrates the importance of normative compliance, as well as the role of procedural justice and trust on police legitimacy. It ends by providing a road map for future scholarship.
