Contemporary psychoanalysis is becoming increasingly attuned to the importance of multicultural and social justice concerns in clinical practice. However, the intersection of clinical and political praxis remains unclear in clinical theory. In order to address the split between theory and practice, Liberation Psychology, an influential movement in social justice and multicultural psychology, will be introduced through the work of Paulo Freire, who was in turn influenced by psychoanalytic insights. The psychoanalytic pedigree of Freire’s thinking will be reviewed, and it will be argued that including Freire within the corpus of psychoanalytic thinkers on social issues can help integrate different strands of thought on the interaction of power, social inequality, and the therapeutic relationship.
