Nine young (mean age 25 yrs) chronic schizophrenic patients participated in a double-blind crossover study of the effects of baclofen. Ss had failed to respond sufficiently to conventional therapeutic measures to permit them to live outside a hospital environment. 60 or 80 mg/day of baclofen or placebo were administered. Each S was receiving a clinically optimum dose of neuroleptic drug, which was continued during the study. Clinical status was monitored twice daily by a nursing staff using a 27-item rating scale, and effects of treatment were analyzed using a paired t test. None of the Ss showed major clinical improvement. In addition, clinicians in charge of Ss' care did not at any time feel that any dosage reduction of neuroleptic was indicated. Results do not support the findings of PK Frederiksen (1975) who added baclofen to the neuroleptic regimen of 13 chronic schizophrenics in an open study and reported that most patients improved.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
