Endothelial cells form the inner lining of the lumen of blood and lymphatic vessels and are the first cell type that differentiates in developing vascular tissue. During mammalian embryonic development, morphogen gradients influence the differentiation and migration of mesodermal endothelial precursors, known as angioblasts, to form a primitive vascular network known as the capillary plexus. This primitive structure coalesces and undergoes morphogenesis to form the dorsal aorta and posterior cardinal vein, foundational elements of the entire blood and lymphatic vascular system. Throughout their development, endothelial cells achieve a remarkable range of diversity, indicative of their varied origins and functional roles in diverse tissues. 1 However, the manner and sequence in which endothelial cells arrive at their terminal phenotypes remain incompletely characterized in vascular biology research.
