This paper argues the assumptions concerning the inter-relatedness of wife beating and child abuse. To do this data from a large research project were collected analyzed and presented to counteract such assumption. Instead it suggests that children of battered wives are more often beaten by their fathers than by their mothers. Furthermore men use force against their wives because of their need to dominate family members rather than because of individual psychopathology or social stresses. This article also discusses some of the difficult questions concerning research in the field of family violence specifically that of sample selection and research methods. It also addresses the issue of how the institutionalized structures that determine what kind of research are easily published may work against the dissemination of feminist research on wife abuse. Such has important implications for understanding wife abuse for clinical interventions and for social policy.
