200 strains of pneumococci isolated in the Boston City Hospital were tested forin vitrosensitivity to penicillin G, erythromycin, tetracycline, nafcillin and oxacillin. 73 of these strains were also tested against cephaloridine. In addition 43 other strains were tested against ampicillin,. 32 against cloxacillin and 41 against cephalothin. 24 capsular serological types were represented, more than half being types 3, 19, 14, 6 or 8.No strains were resistant to any of the 9 antibiotics. The order ofin vitroactivity was erythromycin (the most active), penicillin G, cephaloridine, ampicillin, nafcillin, oxacillin, cephalothin, cloxacillin and tetracycline. The authors emphasize that recent reports of tetracycline-resistant pneumococci indicate the need for surveillance of their antibiotic sensitivity. Erythromycin is recommended as the drug of choice in the presence of allergy to penicillin.G. B. Ludlam.
