The kinetics and mechanism of iron(II) adsorption on a Nigerian brown coal were investigated under various solution conditions. The initial rate of Fe(II) adsorption on demineralized brown coal is first-order with respect to its concentration in solution. The adsorption process exhibits Langmuir behaviour and the free energy of adsorption is −5.98 kJ mol−1. From this observation and the results of desorption tests, it is concluded that the adsorption process is chemical in nature.
