Abnormally fucosylated haptoglobin (FHp) was estimated in blood serum of 31 women and 42 men attending a blood donor session. 10 donors were heavy smokers (>20 cigarettes per day) and 18 were heavy drinkers (>40 g ethanol per day). Raised FHp concentrations were found in 12 individual, all of whom were heavy smokers, heavy drinkers, or both. Among the heavy drinkers/smokers, FHp was not significantly correlated with haptoglobin concentration. Serum fucosyl transferase activity was significantly higher in heavy smokers/drinkers than in non-smokers/drinkers.
