Larvae of D. melanogaster were exposed to sub-lethal temps. The most frequent morphological changes induced were somatic effects simulating known mutations. These effects, designated pheno-copies, were fairly specific for particular treatments and were readily reproducible. They varied, however, with the stage at which the flies were treated, temp. to which they were exposed, duration of the treatment, and genetic constitution of the treated individuals. The period during which treatment was effective was different for different characters. The type most extensively studied was the kn-effect[long dash]a wing reduction of variable degree. The sensitive period for the production of this effect was 41/2-6 days of development with the opt. at 51/4 days. It occurred almost exclusively after exposure to 35[degree]C. for 12-24 hrs. Three specific genetic modifiers were identified; several others were probably present. The order of effectiveness of various stocks examined was[long dash]spineless, Oregon, bar, Florida, white. The results are interpreted in terms of the author's "physiological theory" involving quantitative changes in reaction rates of various developmental processes. Arguments are presented to exclude parallel induction and qualitative changes in developmental reactions. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: M. D. Schweitzer
