In view of the suggested link between the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and human T-cell leukaemia virus (HTLV) the authors re-examined a patient who had had concurrentPneumocystis cariniipneumonia and scabies [seeAbst. Hyg.,1983,58,abst. 3148]. At that time the patient, a 36-year-old Japanese woman, had normal immunological test results except for negative PPD skin tests. A year later, on re-examination, she was found to have a reversed helper/suppressor T-cell ratio and a blood-count of 3.2 × 109/l with 42% lymphocytes. Type C retrovirus particles (ATLV) were found in cultured lymphocytes by electron microscopy and serum samples taken during the course of her illness and on re-examination all were positive for ATLV-associated antigens. This report describes the first Japanese patient with clinical features of AIDS. The authors do not know whether the ATLV infection was the cause or the result of her immunodeficiency.D.W. FitzSimons
