Calcification of different organs in the rat, induced by intravenous challenge with various Fe compounds (FeCl2, FeCl3, ferric dextran, ferric dextrin, ferric oxisaccharated) after sensitization with 1 mg of dihydrotachysterol, was studied histochemically. Fe (Prussian blue reaction) is demonstrable in the target organs before calcification but apparently, in the described experimental conditions, it can attract Ca (von Kossa) only when it is extracellular. Fe plays an important role in the process of induced selective calcification, and it seems to lose its capacity to induce precipitation of Ca salts once it is phagocytized by the cells of the reticuloendothelial system and by the macrophages of the connective tissue.
