Intracellular recordings of cyclically occurring synaptic potentials in jaw-closer and-opener motoneurons have been obtained in the anesthetized guinea pig during spontaneously occurring (7, 10, 11) and cortically induced rhythmical jaw movements (RJMs)(8, 12). The relationship between these potentials and the production of the cortically induced RJMs has been shown in the preceding paper (8). Nakamura and Kubo (23) have shown that repetitive stimulation of the orbital cortex in the paralyzed cat evokes rhythmical membrane-potential changes in trigeminal motoneurons, which are correlated with the alternating discharges that are observed in the masseter (jaw-closer muscle) and digastric (jaw-opener muscle) nerves.
