When ecosystems are not suffering from unusual external perturbations, certain well-defined developmental trends are observed. Since disturbance tends to arrest, or even reverse, these autogenic developments, one can anticipate some ecosystem responses to stress. Trends expected in stressed ecosystems include changes in energetics, nutrient cycling, and community structure and function.
