Malaria is one of the most devastating diseases of human history. In many developing countries, malaria remains a significant health burden with around one million deaths per year, mostly in children under the age of five [1]. Blood stage infections lead to production of both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators by the host immune system [2]. Chronic malaria infections usually promote immunological memory formation [3], and activated immunological memory cells rapidly produce high-affinity antibodies to protect against re-infections [4].It has been shown that antibody dependent mechanisms are important for complete resolution of infections during the chronic phase [4]. Protective immunity against chronic malaria infection is particularly complex, and depends on the generation of long-lived plasma cells (LLPCs) and memory B cells (MBC)[5]. Some T cells are also involved in the process of immunological memory formation [6], with central memory T cells (Tcm) and effector memory T cells (Tem) constituting two subpopulations [7]. When re-infected with Plasmodium, Tcm and Tem rapidly enter the cell cycle, synthesize cytokines, and differentiate into cytotoxic lymphocytes [8]. Follicular helper T cells (Tfh) have also been shown to play a critical role in generating long-lived antibody responses [9].
