The background of this paper is the question of how the contemporary Great Recession is influencing politics: what are the conditions under which an economic crisis in general, and the austerity politics of the Great Recession in pa rticular, lead to a political crisis? Political crises are salient events that punctuate the histor y of a country. They interrupt the steady state equilibrium of incremental policy making under the auspices of a dominant coalition. When the problems the political system faces can no long er be solved incrementally, they result in political crises – ‘salient events like wars, revol utions, overt challenges to governmental legitimacy – in which passions are aroused and the very survival of the system is often at stake’ (Verba 1965: 555).
