METHODSSubjective estimates of mood: Evaluations by the subjects of their fcelings on variables denoting different mood states were made on graphic scales of 100 mm. The midpoint of the scale was denoted" as usual" indicating the subjects normal state of mind, the end-points" less than usual" and" more than usual", respectively. The estimations made by the subjects on the various variables were measured as distances in mm from the endpoint indicating the lowest intensity of each variable. The emotions to be estimated were: nervous, irritated, tense, bad-tempered, distressed, tired, depressed, and restless. The following positive feelings were also included: happy, relaxed, cheerful and calm. In addition, the ability to concentrate, attentiveness, endurance and memory were estimated. Neurovegetative symptoms were expressed in frequencies per day, week or month. These were perspiration, hot-flushes, tachycardia, vertigo and headache. Sexual activity was also measured in terms of frequency of sexual intercource. A n xi e t y: Anxiety was measured with the Finnish version (Lea Pitkanen, 1971) of Taylor's Manifest Anxiety Scale (1953). The test is based on the F, K and L scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventrory, MMPI. The reliability of the scale, measured with split-half, is r=. 87. A high score indicated anxiety.Seven items from the Finnish version were excluded because of negative or low biserial correlations (rbis=. lo). M em or y: The integration Memory Test, constructed by Personal administrativa rbdet, Sweden, in which the task of the subject is to memorize complicated instructions read only once and to perform the tasks given in the instructions, was used. The test has 20 items.
