Every year is peculiar in meteorological, hydrological and other conditions, important for plant growth, and as a consequence of this the changes in phytocoenoses occur from year to year or from one period to another one. This form of dynamics of phytocoenoses is named fluctuation. Fluctuations are especially pronounced in grassland, where they were studied by many plant ecologists (Pachosky 1917, Ramensky 1925, Shennikov 1930, 1941, Rabotnov 1955 and others). Fluctuations, as differentiated from successions, are characterized by (a) differently orientated changes in phytocoenoses from year to year or from one period to another one, (b) reversibility of changes, (c) in typical cases stability of floristic composition, absence of invasion of new species.
