was able to increase both survivin and caspase 3 gene and protein expression in psoriatic skin, suggesting that etanercept mechanism of action is linked to the increase of psoriatic keratinocytes apoptosis and of its physiological brake system, represented by survivin. Particularly, these findings are in line with Gambichler et al. who observed significant increase in survivin expression in UVB plus etanercept-treated psoriatic skin as compared with UVB monotherapy, proving that etanercept treatment could itself enhance survivin in psoriatic skin. In conclusion, our results highlighted that etanercept treatment was able to interfere with replication, proliferation, survival, and apoptosis. A more pronounced activity was observed in the latter two mechanisms, with the novelty consisting in the ability to modulate concomitant apoptosis and survival, possibly avoiding dangerous disequilibrium in these complex pathways.
