In this article the author proposes an alternative reading strategy and chronology for Hab 1,2-2,20. He begins by identifying several difficulties encountered by interpreters of Hab when these chapters are understood as representing either some form of liturgy or dialogue between the prophet and Yhwh. He then draws upon relatively new information contained in the book’s superscription and literary criticism to develop and propose an alternative interpretation. The author notes that many of the difficulties previously encountered no longer exist when the proposed alternative reading strategy and chronology is used. He concludes by showing how this alternative interpretation correlates very well with both Habakkuk’s historical context and the theological tradition of which he was a part.
