Trigeminal orosensory deafferentation produces a reduction in intake whose magnitude is a joint function of the extent of the deafferentation and the sensory properties of the diet. Intake deficits are attributed to depressed oromotor reflexes, disrupted ingestive response sequences, decreased responsiveness to food and water, and a reduced level of long-term body weight regulation.
