Nasal structure in the following genera is descr. Coleonyx, Phyllodactylus, Gerrhonotus, Anniella, Cnemidophorus, Eumeces, Xantusia, Uma, Sceloporus, Calisaurus, Uta, Phryhosoma, Anolis Dipsosaurus, Sauromalus, Ctenosaura, Crotaphytus, and Iguana. Among N. American Iguanidae there are 3 types of nasal structure designated as the Uma, Dipsosaurus, and Anolis types. The Uma type is the most specialized for xeric habits, and represents one type of evolutionary adaptation to intensification of the problem of cleansing of the inspired air accompanying invasion of dry environments and adoption of the habit of burying in the soil. Restriction in extent of mucus-secreting epithelium may be related to water conservation in dry environments, cleansing of the inspired air being cared for to a considerable extent by the vestibular development of the nose. The function of the reptilian nose in thermoregulation of the inspired air is pointed out.
