Monoclonal antibodies (MCAs) allow the precise definition of individual molecular components in complex structures such as the cell surface and the cytoskeleton. Mouse and rat MCAs raised against human antigens have identified a variety of molecules of clinical interest. Indeed such antibodies are already being shown to have clinical use in the diagnosis of cancer, both by providing markers of tumour load and for the radiolocalization of tumour deposits. Therapeutic trials in cancer have already begun using xenogeneic antibodies.
