This article originated in my belief that the information provided by Moodies Services, Ltd., had not been adequately exploited for academic purposes. The corrections which must be made to earnings and dividends for captial changes are very laborious, and could hardly have been done without the co-operation of Moodies Services, for which I am most gratefuL Being but an amateur statistician, I apologize in advance for the elementary and probably inefficient methods used:'and also for the fact that time has prevented me tying up a number of loose ends, and a really full exploitation of the figures collected. I have, however, at least convinced myself of the truth of the results arrived at. Furthermore, the raw figures are now available to anyone who sees further possibilities of analysis. In spite of the free use made of the Oxford computer, 2 a great deal of laborious calculation was required which was undertaken by Mr. Liaquat AIL3Part I. Company Earnings and Dividend Growth 1951-59 The figures given in Part I are a by-product of the attempt, described in later parts of this article, to find some laws of growth of company earnings. As far as I know such broadly based figures for changes in earnings and dividends, which have been corrected for capital changes, have not previously been compiled and published.
