The perpendicular1, 2 and parallel2, 3 alignment of π-conjugated polymers on the surfaces of substrates such as amorphous carbon sheets and glass plates has been a subject of recent interest. It has been recently demonstrated (1) that regioregular head-to-tail (HT) poly (3-hexylthiophene-2, 5-diyl)(P3HexTh) with 96% regioregularity prefers an aligned structure with the hexyl group oriented toward the surface of a SiO2/Si substrate when spin-coated and (2) that the HT-P3HexTh film thus obtained yields a much larger carrier mobility than a spin-coated film of regiorandom P3HexTh. 4 The higher mobility is important for the construction of electronic and optical polymer devices with excellent performance, and such alignment of HT-P3HexTh might be related to the very recently reported superconductivity of HT-P3HexTh. 5 In our previous studies6, 7 on the electrochemical deposition of HT-P3HexTh with 98.5% regioregularity, we also noted a similar alignment of HT-P3HexTh molecules, with a higher degree of orientation on various substrates.
