General aspects of collembolan ecology at the turn of the millennium

I have tried to summarize some lines of research on collembolan ecology from the last part of the 20th century which I think have general interest and I have given a few examples of the kind of research which in my opinion are promising to follow up in the coming years. This is not to claim that these themes are the only ones worth mentioning or even the most important. I have for instance not elaborated on the development of theoretical models in mutual interaction with advanced mathematics or on simulation modelling which takes advantage of the still accelerating power of computer techniques. These areas will without doubt be developed much further in the present century. However, it should not be forgotten that useful models depend entirely on good experimental - and field data, both as generators of new hypotheses and as representation of the real world against which the theories and models should be tested.
