The phenomenon of correlation pleiades, i.e. the presence of correlations between some quantitative characteristics of certain parts of an organism and at the same time the absence of correlations between these and the other parts demonstrates the independence of certain developmental processes with respect to other processes within the organism and is thus the manifestation of developmental homeostasis. Nineteen species of herbaceous plants have been studied in order to determine the variability in the degree of dependence between the dimensions of vegetative (stems, leafs, inflorescences) and reproductive (perianths and flowers) parts of an organism. It has been established that in 12 species the dimensions of perianths and flowers are organized into a correlation pleiad while 7 species have no correlation pleiades with respect to the dimensions of analogous parts. Existence of correlation pleiades is associated with the presence of specific insect pollinators. Insects were the selective factor stabilizing the dimensions of those parts of flowers which participate in the process of the precise localization of pollen on the insect body. Correlation pleiades involving flower dimensions are the result of their selective action. The adoption of a quantitative criterion provides an adequate basis for the comparative method in the study of stabilizing selection.
