Climate combines with scenery to make this a dramatic country. Fold upon fold, forest and open grassland roll upwards from reedy swamps and lakes towards a vast bowl of sky crossed by everchanging cloud formations, crowned by upthrusts of eroded granite broken into piles of tumbled rocks. Here and there a candelabra tree juts out to overshadow a cave where the rain priests sacrifice to the ancestral python who is also Magheme the Thinker, who in co-operation with Mahanya the Speaker and Matunda the Creator produced the world of living things in obedience to the command of Marungu the sky god.
