The digital economy has led to the infiltration of technology and the automation of our daily lives, one of the most personal and innocuous spheres being that of the smart home. Statistics suggest that smart home device purchases (e.g., smart speakers, smart TVs, smart doorbells) are increasing annually due to affordability and the plethora of options beyond the mainstream tech brands (i.e., GAFA - Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple). This conceptual working paper provides a multidisciplinary overview of the smart home phenomenon, examining Responsible Artificial Intelligence (RAI), security, and privacy from both computer and social science perspectives. Specifically, we consider the sociotechnical complex online harms faced by consumers, which include all the unintended consequences of the practical use and evolution of technologies resulting from a complex interaction of societal processes driven by diverse stakeholders.
