Effects of temperature on the toxicity of two pyrethroid insecticides to grasshopper were evaluated. In the laboratory, nymphs of two grasshopper species, Camnula pellucida (Scudder) and Melanoplus bivittatus (Say), were sprayed with alphamethrin at 10 or 20 g/ha (equivalent to effective field rates), deltamethrin at 6 g/ha, or alphamethrin at 10 g/ha combined with diazinon at 300 g/ha, and immediately transferred to constant temperatures of 15, 19, 23, 27, or 31.degree. C. None of the insecticides were less effective at 27 or 31.degree. C than at lower temperatures. Mortality rates were greater and occurred more rapidly at higher temperatures. On the second and subsequent days after treatment, mortalities at 23, 27, or 31.degree. C did not differ significantly. Mortality at 19.degree. C was significantly lower than at 23-31.degree. C, and morality at 15.degree. C was lower than at 19.degree. C. Interactions of toxicity with temperature, insecticide, and species are discussed.
