The Centers for Disease Control in 1981 reported an epidemic of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and Kaposi's sarcoma in young previously healthy homosexual men (1, 2). Additional reports have been published identifying viral, bacterial, fungal, and protozoan infections in this and other patient groups (3-5). Clinicalobservations and immunologic evaluations have defined an Acquired Immunologic Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in these patients (3-7).In many of the initial cases described, five major features were found. They were opportunistic infections (1), such as Pneumocystis carlnll pneumonia, Kaposi's sarcoma (2), cytomegalovirus infections (3), recreational drug use (4), and homosexual or bisexual activities (5). Several of these reports have presented evidence for an acquired T cell defect in these patients. These patients are usually anergic, lymphopenic, and have decreased lymphocyte proliferation to mitogens and antigens in vitro. Analysis of peripheral blood T cell populations has revealed decreased numbers of the T helper/inducer population (Leu 3+ or OKT4+) subset and an increased percentage of T suppressor/cytotoxic cells (Leu 2+ or OKT8+)(3, 6, 7). These studies have not reported any changes in T cell subsets during the course of the disease. Thus, we undertook a four month longitudinal study of a patient with this syndrome using T cell subset analysis.
