Allergic rhinitis is an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated disease of the nasal membranes. It represents the most common cause of chronic nasal congestion in childhood. Epidemiologic data show that in the United States allergic rhinitis occurs in 6 million children, accounting for 2 million days of school loss per year and 6 million days of restricted activity."
