I like this book for several reasons. It opens up a new part of the media world to researchers preoccupied with Western Europe and North America. It discusses in a (mostly) systematic manner a series of highly relevant factors in the shaping of the media systems in the Central and East European (hereafter: cee) countries. It combines political, historical, sociological, and economic arguments to describe a dynamic process. Several of the chapters also ‘speak to each other,’making the reader wiser chapter by chapter. And finally, the chapters are (mostly) very well written. The Introduction written by the editors starts out with a brief review of prior research in the field. Two major lessons are drawn from the earlier studies:
