These ciliates were briefly exposed to lethal concentrations of various salts, sugars, urea, a protein, an alkaloid, and an alcohol. All except ethanol produced selective shedding of the oral membranelles, generally followed by complete recovery with regeneration of these organelles. The primordium of the oral membranelles was shed after a longer exposure, its susceptibility varying directly with the degree of development attained. Some compounds also caused pigment sloughing and in some cases apparently a casting off of an outer layer of the cell. NaI and KI were found to give complete, reversible anesthesia of the myonemes; and special effects of chemicals on activity of the cilia were noted. In sublethal concentrations of sea water and of LiCl there was a variable inhibition of regeneration of feeding organelles, ranging from mere delay in the appearance of the oral primordium, through astomatous differentiation of the peristome, to complete blockage of anlagen formation. Both solutions can cause failure in separation of dividing cells. LiCl also produced a marked structural increase in the transverse dimension of the cell not due to swelling.
