‘I’he aim of this work is to investigate the role of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in illuminated photosynthetic tissues. It is often assumed that the ATP requirements of the illuminated mature leaf are met by photophosphorylation, implying that mitochondria are inactive. Recently it has been clearly demonstrated that mitochondrial ATP synthesis plays a crucial role in leaf metabolism. The application of concentrations of oligomycin chosen so that only mitochondrial and not plastidic ATP synthesis is inhibited has been shown to reduce the rate of photosynthesis, via a reduction in the rate of ATP synthesis [13, supporting earlier results that suggested that the reducing power released by glycine oxidation during photorespiration could be coupled to ATP
